Application of Cognitive Apprenticeship in an Online Computer Science 1 Course: A Model Construction and Validation Case

Fri, April 17, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside West

Abstract

“CS1” is the first undergraduate course that computer science majors are required to take. CS1 requires the application of programming skills, which are difficult to learn because of their cognitive complexity. Cognitive apprenticeship (CA) has been used to develop abstract and complex skills in CS1 and other subjects such as mathematics and science but most of the studies were conducted in a face-to-face or blended learning environment. A two-phase design and development approach guided the construction and internal validation of an online CS1 course. Results from an expert-review of a preliminary course guide confirmed CA’s value as an effective, efficient, and appealing strategy for designing an online CS1 course. Future research should focus on external validation of the design.
