Toward Just and Inclusive Education for Religious Minorities: A View From Hong Kong and Modesto, California

Fri, April 17, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside East

Abstract

This project seeks to expose and problematize the representations of religious minorities in curricula and texts in two educational contexts: Hong Kong and Modesto, California. The study examines the discourses in two multicultural contexts to illuminate the representation of religious minorities in Modesto’s ninth grade World Geography and World Religions course, and Hong Kong’s form three Liberal Studies course. We explore these discourses to expose how these curricula and textbooks place problematic restrictions on the representations of religious minorities and examine theoretical notions of critical multiculturalism, citizenship, justice and inclusive education. We suggest that these two multicultural societies have much work to do in order to include marginalized groups in their curricula and texts.
