Exploring the Competitive Effects of Expanded-Time Schools: A Spotlight on Parental School Choice

Fri, April 17, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside West

Abstract

Implementing Expanded Learning Time Initiatives is a common procedure in OECD-member states. This paper focuses Germany, where schools have the possibility to extend school time until graduation by one year. In addition to pedagogical approaches, the length of schooling until graduation offers schools the opportunity to strengthen their individual profile in a competitive environment: Schools use the additional school time to differentiate themselves from the common offering of their competitors and to appeal as many students or rather their parents as possible. Referring to empirical data of a parental full survey (N=3618) and education statistics, this paper analyzes whether and to what extent the length of schooling until graduation is an effective distinguishing feature for schools in competitive environments.
