Advising Doctoral Students in Education Programs

Fri, April 17, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside West

Abstract

Because almost half of all students who enroll in American doctoral programs do not complete their degrees, it is important to understand the factors that lead to doctoral student attrition. Research suggests that one of those factors is the nature of the advisor-advisee relationship. Though scholars have identified key components of successful doctoral advising relationships, no research has been conducted to determine the extent to which universities place value on and encourage excellence in doctoral student advising. In this study, the researchers conducted a content analysis of institutional documents related to doctoral advising in four types of education doctoral programs from within a purposeful sample of universities to unveil values and expectations related to doctoral student advising.
