A self-report emergent reading motivation measure targeting pre-kindergarten children, called Emergent Reading Motivation Scale (ERMS), was developed, and a validation study was carried out with 57 prekindergarten children. The ERMS was administered as a conversation between two sock puppets and a child. Results suggested that the ERMS is an age-appropriate measure for pre-kindergarteners and has a three-factor structure even though its internal consistency is moderate. It had limited predictive power of emergent literacy skills.
