Intercollegiate athletic departments are complex organizations in need of individuals with specialized training and experience—credentials which have been increasingly sought through graduate education. Despite the increasing prevalence of graduate credentials, little is known about the motivations or choice processes of those seeking an advanced degree. Focusing on individuals interested in a career in intercollegiate athletics, this study seeks to understand their motivation to pursue graduate school and the reasons for choosing their specific program as it relates to their career aspirations. Findings will shed light on a sub-population and decision-making process that is not well understood, may inform institutions and programs on best practices for recruitment, as well as provide insight for individuals considering embarking on this path.
