Abstract

The context of any professional development is known to influence its effectiveness yet there is little current research across the variety of contexts, specifically educators who work in rural communities. Secondary science teacher professional learning communities located in rural communities provide a rich area of untapped information. This study explores 9 components of context of a rural PLC. Participants emphasize the importance of culture and the challenge of the community and local politics. Understanding the context is essential for the continued design, development and implementation of professional learning communities as a form of PD.
