Transformative experience represents a deep-engagement construct and refers to experiences in which students use curricular content to see and experience the world in meaningful new ways outside the classroom. The current study investigated the relation between aspects of the student-teacher dynamic and transformative experience. Controlling for students’ initial levels of interest in, identification with, and confidence in the domain, we found students’ sense of connection with their instructor and perception of their instructor’s passion for the content were predictive of transformative experience. These results suggest teachers may be able to support engagement in transformative experiences by connecting with students and expressing a passion for the content.
