Abstract

This ethnographic study contributes timely empiricism to the national discourse on college readiness. The research describes how 10 first generation students experienced a 15-page college-level writing assignment the summer before their matriculation at four-year institutions across the country. Derived from more than 30 hours of focus group and interview discussion, the data suggest that the failures students experienced during assignment execution provoked comprehensive insights on college writing behaviors and dispositions. Suggestions for research on an experiential learning model of college writing preparation and remediation are made.
