While there are many proposed strategies to aid content-area reading comprehension, research has demonstrated that simply being cognitively aware of a strategy does not mean a student knows how to properly implement the strategy. Therefore, to understand how reading strategies can support scientific literacy, we must examine the differences in reading habits between high and low achieving L2 (second language) students. This study compares the strategies used (and misused) by high and low achieving L2 students. Strategy use and other reading behaviors were correlated with reading comprehension scores. In addition, we make recommendations for future research and classroom practice.
