Models of cultural competence frequently have been used to develop tools for assessing preservice teachers’ dispositions, knowledge, and beliefs related to teaching diverse students. Moreover, accreditation organizations increasingly require preservice disposition measures that reflect valid and reliable results. In this cross-validation study, we examined the psychometric properties of a survey developed by Liang and Zhang (2009) designed to measure preservice teachers’ cultural competence. Results revealed a first-order four-factor model, distinct from the original model, and a higher order factor model. Suggestions for improvements to the original questionnaire as well as implications for developing sound measures for assessing preservice teachers’ dispositions related to diversity and culturally competent and responsive teaching practices will be shared.
