The Role of Faith in Social Justice Initiatives of an Educator in 20th-Century China

Fri, April 17, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

This case study of Dr. Luella Miner, educational missionary to China from 1887 – 1935, explores the role of religious faith in social justice initiatives. Data collection consisted of 18 days of reading documents in the archives at Harvard and Yale, which house Miner’s letters, journals, and publications that span five decades. Analysis reveals that Miner engaged in communities of practice that included missionary, scholar, and social activist. The question: “Is justice a compelling interest in education research, theorizing, and policy-making?” was addressed by Miner, who drew from her religious faith in her engagement in social justice initiatives. This study has the potential to motivate educators of all faiths to draw from their spiritual beliefs to inform their educational practice.
