The Returns to Private Higher Education: Evidence From Taiwan's Higher Technological and Vocational Institutions

Fri, April 17, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside West

Abstract

Since 1990s, Taiwan’s higher education sector has experienced tremendous expansion. Private HTVE institutions form the major component of higher education in Taiwan. This study adopts the wage-schooling equations which modified from Binelli & Rubio-Codina (2013) to estimate rate of return of Taiwan’s private higher education institutions. Findings demonstrate that the rate of return were 8.5% for 2012, and the rate of return for attaining private HTVE institutions is declining about 10% since 1990. Despite of traditional society’s myth of private/public in most Asian countries, the trend of declining may have been caused by the rapid expansion number of private institutions and increasing recruitment number of these institutions during the period of 1990-2010.
