A Framework to Analyze Feedback on Students' Design Work

Fri, April 17, 8:15 to 9:45am, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

In this paper, we aim to identify characteristics of feedback on design work provided by engineering educators in order to identify expert-novice differences and develop professional development opportunities for educators to learn how to give feedback on design work. We created a coding scheme with three domains: Substance, Level of Specificity, and Focus of Feedback. Based on this coding scheme, we analyzed the feedback provided by instructors and GTAs of a first-year engineering course. In summary, the majority of feedback comments were Specific, focused on one or more design aspects, provided evaluation, or gave specific direction. In addition, educators mostly pointed out the weaknesses in the students’ work rather than acknowledging strengths of the work.
