Abstract

To meet the ever-growing need to increase college enrollment for individuals with exceptionalities, the current project examined the experiences of students with disabilities, their families, faculty, and staff during an exceptionalities awareness campaign. The purpose of this study was to bring these students and their families to campus and to assist faculty, staff, and administration with issues relevant to learners with special needs. Through a Self-Determination Theory (SDT) frame, this study hoped to unveil the mystery of academia for marginalized populations and show that attainment of their goals is indeed within their reach. This study also allowed the opportunity for university faculty and staff to visit with individuals with disabilities to discuss their strengths and needs for successful college completion.
