This study examined the academic preparation and school administrative experience of tenure-line faculty in leadership preparation programs in the United States by institution type, analyzing data collected from an online survey of 775 full-time educational leadership faculty members. Findings disclosed that faculty in research institutions were significantly more likely to have earned a PhD from a research institution, to lack school administrative experience, and to indicate that research was their primary strength. Faculty in comprehensive institutions were significantly more likely to have earned an EdD from a research institution, to have previous school administrative experience, and to cite teaching as their primary strength. The profiles of faculty employed in doctoral institutions were closely aligned to those working in comprehensive institutions.
