Examining Teacher Leadership: A Decade of Research After York-Barr and Duke

Thu, April 16, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Marriott, Floor: Fifth Level, Kansas City

Abstract

In 2004, York-Barr and Duke conducted what is widely considered to be the seminal literature review concerning teacher leadership. This review created a foundation for research and thoughts concerning teacher leadership, but much has changed since 2004. Therefore, we are conducting a review of the literature on the topic of teacher leadership from 2004 to 2013. As a sub-study of this review, results from abstract analysis revealed that many of York-Barr and Duke’s concerns with teacher leadership literature persist, including the abundance of purely descriptive literature and reliance on untriangulated data. Within the articles that rose above such concerns, a focus on conditions that impact teacher leadership and the variety of tasks performed by teacher leaders were found.
