Head Start at 50: A Critical Historical Review

Fri, April 17, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Swissotel, Floor: Lucerne Level, Lucerne II

Abstract

Head Start, the third in a series of United States (U.S.) Federal government-sponsored national early education programs, has been the beneficiary of lessons learned in war and peace. On its fiftieth anniversary it is appropriate to examine its achievements and its limitations and miscalculations with a critical eye. It has served as an exemplar for early childhood educators worldwide in the areas of: curriculum development, standards, appropriate and eco-friendly facilities and materials, whole child development (physical, affective and cognitive), health and nutrition, professional development of staff, parent participation and education, respect for and consideration of diversity of culture and ability, and community collaboration. Research studies, primary sources, including first-person accounts and oral histories, and verified secondary sources are used.
