Fri, April 17, 8:15 to 10:15am, Marriott, Floor: Third Level, Cook

Abstract

The scope of the current study is learning English as a foreign language. Advanced language learning strategies (LLS) such as cognitive and metacognitive have been found to be connected with higher language proficiency. The aim of this study is to develop assignments within a personal learning environment (PLE) for an English course promoting advanced LLS at a university in Estonia. Data was collected from 28 students through pre- and post-testing and focus group interviews. The results of the study showed a significant improvement in compensation and social strategies. A significant relationship was found between compensation strategies and content knowledge. Further research should focus on reinforcing the assignments, especially regarding advancing the metacognitive strategies.
