The purpose of this study was to better understand the role of institutional culture on the socialization experiences of 12 international women faculty at one striving university. Environments that encourage striving behaviors have been found to be less friendly for women faculty members than their male counterparts (Wolf-Wendel & Ward, 2006a; Wolf-Wendel & Ward, 200b) and are related to high faculty turnover in part due to changes in expectations for being granted tenure (Gardner, 2010). A qualitative methodology was used. Findings highlighted the lack of understanding of older faculty member who were not socialized to the same research expectations, and the disconcerting level of student “quality” found at their current institution.
