Abstract

This study uses Developmentally Appropriate Practice (DAP) to examine the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for kindergarten in early literacy. Studies have reported that many early childhood teachers have a difficulty in implementing the CCSS because the content conflicts with their belief in DAP. Additionally, a lack of literature reveals the gap between DAP and the CCSS. Therefore, content analysis is utilized to explore the differences between the CCSS and DAP and the results show that the CCSS disregards the core values of DAP, especially in terms of age appropriateness, individual appropriateness, and social and cultural appropriateness. This study aims to identify and minimize the conflicts between the CCSS and DAP and provide possible directions to modify the CCSS.
