Abstract

This paper will discuss key findings from the first year of a research project focused on transitions across indigenous language education settings. The project is funded by the New Zealand ‘Teaching and Learning Research Initiative’ (TLRI) programme. The project is a collaborative cross-sector involving (kaiako) teacher researchers in a kōhanga reo (Māori language early childhood education setting) and a kura kaupapa Māori (Māori language immersion school), along with university-based researchers. The research is expected to provide important new insights into learning and teaching in Māori immersion settings and into ways of enhancing children’s transitions from Māori immersion early childhood education to Māori immersion classrooms.
