Exploring the Mathematics and Science Identity Development of Black Male University Students

Mon, April 20, 8:15 to 9:45am, Swissotel, Floor: Event Centre Second Level, St. Gallen 1

Abstract

Research on Black males in mathematics and science primarily focuses on underrepresentation, underperformance and the achievement gap between White and Black students. Research provides little attention to home and school structures that contribute to Black males mathematics and science identity development. In this exploratory qualitative research study, five undergraduates and one graduate Black male science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) majors attending a Research I public university offer insight into K-12 experiences that shaped participation in STEM; as well as experiences in post-secondary education that influence persistence. Findings provide insight into successes and barriers that affect Black males academic achievement in mathematics and science in K-12 and post-secondary institutions.
