Combining Teaching and Counseling Roles: Implications for Students' Willingness to Seek Help From School Counselors

Mon, April 20, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

One of the unique characteristics of school counselors in Israel is that they also serve as teachers. They are required not only to counsel, but also to devote a third of their time to in-class teaching. Although this is the national policy, the question of whether this has positive or negative effects on students' willingness to seek help from counselors has almost never been studied. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of combining teaching and counseling on counselors' role as help providers. The study focused on students’ willingness to seek help for dealing with bullying, and shows that the combined teaching-counseling roles have positive effects. Implications for counseling and schools will be discussed.
