In this paper I examine the ethical responsibility placed on colleges and universities towards educational goals centered on human identity and subjectification. Achieving and maintaining such ends in the twenty-first century may require discarding the ‘developmental’ discourse of the twentieth century, advancing an understanding of human identity and subjectification rooted in complexity sciences. The ethical imperative for such a shift is examined utilizing textual analysis, philosophical inquiry, and post-qualitative approaches to current theories of college student identity.
