A Case Study of Teachers' Views on New First-Grade Curriculum Implementation in Turkey

Mon, April 20, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate teachers’ perceptions on first grade curriculum implementation on the use of Turkish new education standards during the 2012-2013 academic year. This study was based upon a phenomenological design through structured interviews. Ten teachers discussed opportunities and challenges of the implementation process of the new standards during the first year of implementation. The sampling method was snowball technique. To ensure validity of the interpretations, data triangulation and member checking were used. A thematic analysis was performed once interview responses were transcribed. The results showed that while a standardized curriculum was implemented across schools, each school interpreted it differently.
