What would it really mean to study the world from the standpoint of [adolescent girls] both as knowers and as actors?” asks sociologist Anne Oakley (1994, p. 23). What approaches would make it possible for girls and young women, as knowers and actors to influence social policy and social change in the context of sexual violence? This paper studies the activism of girls and young women through its focus on the outcome of a year-long arts-based participatory project with fourteen first year rural female students enrolled in a faculty of education at a university in the Eastern Cape of South Africa.
