Language, Culture, and Heritage Shape Teachers' Personal–Professional Identities

Fri, April 17, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

The authors examine the meaning of language, culture, and heritage in their own lives and pedagogical practice with the aim of advancing justice in urban school contexts and society. The first author is a college of education faculty in a teacher preparation program and the second author is her former student. As a current credential candidate in Languages Other than English (Italian), she is also a part-time lecturer in Italian at the same four-year university. Using racial identity development as a theoretical and analytical framework and narrative inquiry as a methodology, the authors chronicle their journey by discussing the influential role socialization (language, culture, and heritage) and lived experiences play in shaping their personal and professional identities.
