Drawing on the Hoover-Dempsey and Sandler’s model, this study investigated the role of school and parent factors in promoting their involvement. Using a nationally representative dataset (NHES: 2007), we found that informative school-family communication and welcoming school environment were positively associated with parent involvement, while parental satisfaction with school practices was negatively associated. Notably, parent role construction mediated the link between school factors and parent involvement. The significance of the meditational model implies that a desirable approach to understand parent involvement would be the one that focuses on a family-school partnership framework, rather than a traditional school-expert based framework.
