Seven Formative Assessment Moves Unpacked: Notes From a Formative Assessment Lesson Study

Mon, April 20, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Marriott, Floor: Fourth Level, Belmont

Abstract

While research has shown that teachers who engage in formative assessment may have the most powerful impact on student learning (Black & Wiliam, 1998), less is known about the development of individual teachers’ formative assessment practices. Duckor’s (2014) “7 moves” framework offers a developmental perspective on teacher learning progressions in this area of pedagogical practice. By decomposing teachers’ practices through video-based professional development sessions, we offer insight into the adoption of Common Core math standards by focusing on “turns of talk, listening and speaking” in classrooms. These video exemplars and coding tools are shared from a case study of middle school math teachers in Northern California.
