Ethics of Exemplary Black Educators: Implications for Teacher Education and the Preparation of Prospective Black Teachers

Sun, April 19, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Marriott, Floor: Third Level, Kane/McHenry

Abstract

It is a well-documented fact that African American teachers have a positive and meaningful impact on the educational success of African American students. Yet, less is known about the role of teacher education in the cultivation of these exemplary teachers. Indeed, research has highlighted the beliefs and practices of exemplary African American teachers, however fewer studies have explicitly explored the implications of African American pedagogy on the ways future African American teachers are prepared. Thus the purpose of this presentation is to share findings from a qualitative study with community-nominated successful Black educators about the nature of their cultural insights, which can inform the preparation of African American teachers. Implications for teacher educators are included.
