Mixed methods research is growing in acceptance across disciplines and is becoming increasingly complex, nuanced, and specialized. In response to these trends, we describe our efforts in developing a new Mixed Methods Research I course that serves as a practical introduction to the mixed methods research field. We discuss the framework that we developed as a guide to the complexity and nuances of the field. The framework takes the form of a mixed methods socio-ecological model that positions the conduct of mixed methods within a system of hierarchical contexts and relationships that influence and shape mixed methods practice. We then discuss how we used this framework to structure the pedagogical approach for a new course on mixed methods research.
