Motivations and Perceptions Predicting Future Indonesian Teachers' Professional Engagement and Career Development Aspirations

Abstract

The paper examines Indonesian future teachers’ motivations for entering teacher education and perceptions of the teaching profession, measured by the FIT-Choice scale (Watt & Richardson, 2007), religious commitment, and predictors of professional engagement and career development aspirations (PECDA; Watt & Richardson, 2008). 854 Indonesian final-year preservice teachers from four universities (age M=21.61 years, SD=2.31, women n=667, 83.16%) participated in the survey. From SEM analyses, PECDA was predicted by religious beliefs, intrinsic career value, job security/career progression and enhance social equity motivations; and perceptions of teaching expertise, and satisfaction with choice of teaching. The study expands the FIT-Choice theoretical framework by integrating Indonesian-specific cultural factors and incorporating measures of religious commitment.
