Social Network Typologies: Insights From STEM-Themed Urban Schools

Sun, April 19, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Swissotel, Floor: Event Centre Second Level, Vevey 4

Abstract

Social network analysis was applied to investigate K-8 STEM themed schools. Using responses to advice seeking questionnaires, teacher networks were translated into sociograms as well as statistical analyses. Even within a single school, the flow of informational resources varied depending on the realm of the subject matter being addressed. In one particular school, more network leaders were identified for science content than for science instruction. For some aspects (esp. curriculum) information flow was decentralized while other information such as instructional materials was highly centralized. These findings suggest that social networks research should not treat all subjects equally but should attend to the varied dimensions of subject matter delivery in order to develop a more accurate representation of schools’ organizational structures.
