Beyond the Classroom: How Institutional Culture of Care Addresses Classroom Management Challenges

Abstract

While there is much research analyzing teachers’ impacts on classroom management and discipline, there is far less research that looks at how the culture of the school sets the context and conditions for the types and severity of disciplinary problems experienced in the classroom. In this paper we argue that classroom management is not just a classroom issue, but rather it is a systemic school-wide issue that can be addressed by developing a caring school culture. This study provides evidence from a student survey of over 6,500 students that suggest that developing an Institutional Culture of Care leads to a schooling environment which significantly reduces the need for negative disciplinary practices both inside and outside of the classroom.
