Abstract

In this paper, we aim to contribute to the research efforts that integrate multiple perspectives to better understand science classroom discourse. Specifically, we report on our collaborative effort to make sense of a controversial exchange in an AP Biology class on evolution. While each of the authors draws on one of four different constructs, namely identity, affect, expectations, and coherence seeking, we continually shared and discussed our analyses throughout the process. Here, we address methodological questions related to the mileages gained from our collaboration, with respect to understanding both the focal data and the constructs themselves. We discuss implications for future research that aims to join expertise across different epistemological, methodological, and analytical frameworks.
