"Village Mentality": The Lived Experiences of African American Female Mentors

Abstract

This phenomenological study highlights the mentoring experience for six African American females who are currently mentoring African American female youth. This study explores emergent themes around the experiences of African American female mentors. Employing hermeneutic phenomenology, a methodology which seeks the meaning or nature of an experience, allows for deeper understanding of the mentoring experience. With the driving question, “What is the lived experience of African American female mentors mentoring African American female youth?” the researcher explores the mentoring experience from a unique and insightful perspective which adds to the educational literature around mentoring with implications for engaging in research outside of the school and classroom context.
