Understanding Singaporean Secondary Teachers' Conceptions of Assessment and Associated Contextual Factors

Thu, April 16, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

This study examines teachers’ conceptions of assessment (COA) and various contextual factors on them at the classroom, school, or national level. A representative survey of Singaporean secondary school teachers resulted in a final sample consists of 182 teachers from 7 secondary schools. While previous work has examined teachers’ COA and relationships to their teaching practices, little prior research has explored the possible influences on teachers’ COA, which could enable development and testing of interventions to support teachers’ COA. Findings examine patterns in the teachers’ COAs, how the results differ from previous study, and possible interpretations regarding the contextual factors for assessment within the Singapore system. Potential implications for teacher education, school policy, and future research will be discussed.
