The MUSIC model of academic motivation stresses five principles of motivation: empowerment, utility, success, interest, and care. Jones’ approach to teaching motivation strategies via the MUSIC model involves four primary elements: presenting the MUSIC Model of Academic Motivation to educational psychology students as an organizational framework, connecting implications of theories and research to the MUSIC model framework, requiring students to analyze instruction using the MUSIC model, and facilitating a discussion of the instructional analysis. Using the MUSIC model to organize motivation strategies can be an effective approach for educational psychology instructors because it decreases cognitive load when students are learning motivation strategies.
