Engaging Undergraduate Researchers to Understand Diversity in Higher Education

Abstract

Using participatory action research, our study actively engaged undergraduate students in an undergraduate research apprenticeship (URAs) to examine the role of classroom dynamics, faculty-student interaction, and peer/social interaction among diverse students at one university. Our results offer unique findings that integrate and document the experiences of our student researchers as they actively constructed a research project. Specifically, we present findings on the role of classroom tone, expanded definitions of faculty, and safety versus isolation among peer groups.
