There is an ongoing debate about the construct validity of performance approach and performance avoidance goal orientations due to their high interdependence. To better understand these two constructs, we focus on their underlying dimensions: performance evaluation standard (normative comparison; shared by both performance goal orientations) and goal valence (approach/avoidance; differentiating between performance goal orientations). We postulate that goal valence accounts for differential associations of performance goal orientations with competence expectancy, intrinsic motivation and performance; whereas evaluation standard is responsible for the high interdependence and associations with trait anxiety. Data from two longitudinal studies with university and school students support our two-dimensional model. Therefore, we conclude that achievement goal research should shift its focus from goal constructs to underlying dimensions.
