Consensus Versus Concreteness: Tensions in Designing for Scale

Mon, April 20, 8:15 to 9:45am, Swissotel, Floor: Event Centre First Level, Zurich AB

Abstract

This paper describes the process of developing an intervention that will be implemented and scaled up within a large urban district. To overcome past challenges of implementation and scale, this design process was focused around the creation of a district innovation design team that included representation from the district central office and individual schools that would be the first sites of implementation. The design process also emphasized the creation of a singular district innovation with adaptation to local school context. This paper describes the design process and resulting innovation through the framework of four design factors: the emphasis of the design, level of complexity, how teachers and leaders are engaged, and implementation support
