This study investigated readers’ moment-by-moment processing of a series of refutation texts.
A think-aloud methodology was used to explore the cognitive processes readers enacted while reading texts that refuted their initial beliefs. A written posttest assessed their post-reading beliefs. The think-aloud analysis highlighted at which points in the texts readers detected discrepancies between their initial beliefs and the correct beliefs and the exact processes with which they dealt with these discrepancies – successfully or unsuccessfully, as indicated by post-reading scores. The findings were consistent with the KReC framework, which outlines how knowledge revision is accomplished in the context of our reading experiences.
