Commonly used instruments for measuring adolescent reading motivation do not attend to the multiple content areas in which adolescents read; contexts with divergent reading purposes. The current study explores the validity and utility of a new measure sensitive to students’ diverse classroom contexts. This study was conducted in three middle schools with 140 students across twenty mathematics, science, social studies, and English language arts classrooms. Confirmatory factor analysis was employed to examine the novel measure’s factor structure and instrument validity will be investigated through correlations with existing reading motivation measures and by triangulating data across multiple raters. Educational implications include the potential for teachers to monitor and respond to students’ reading motivation across various content area reading activities.
