Too Much, Yet Not Enough: The Case of a Novice Teacher's Preparation for a Linguistically Diverse Classroom

Thu, April 16, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

Among the most significant imperatives facing our current education system is meeting the needs of a rapidly increasing culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) student population. While the number of ELLs has been steadily increasing, the number of teachers adequately prepared to meet the educational needs and unique cultural and linguistic challenges that ELLs face in the classroom has failed to parallel the demand. This study aims at contributing to two interrelated strands of research in teacher education, (1) teacher education for CLD students and (2) alternative/early-entry pathways to teacher preparation, by examining how an alternatively certified teacher was prepared to work in a culturally and linguistically diverse classroom.
