In this paper, we report findings from a multi-year effort aimed at understanding the developing narrative knowledge of preservice teachers. Our objective is to provide results from a tightly focused subset of a larger corpus of over 1500 narratives. We focus on the analysis of preservice teachers’ stories related to concerns regarding social justice, in particular the narratives of elementary school-aged student policing toward the gender binary and privileging the hegemonic male. Findings from this work raise important questions about how the teacher education community might develop curriculum which allows novice teachers to develop habits of mind geared toward analysis and reflection but also which is directed specifically toward confronting issues of social injustice targeted at gender nonconforming students.
