Using problem-based learning, GlobalEd 2 (GE2) provides an interdisciplinary approach to learning written argumentation within social studies classrooms. Leveraging technologies commonly available in most middle grade classrooms, GE2 engages classrooms of students in simulated, international negotiations on global issues such as water resource scarcity and climate change. This presentation details results of a randomized treatment/control study examining the impact of the simulation on the writing self-efficacy and written argumentation in science of 343, 7th and 8th grade students. Results indicate that students participating in a GE2 simulation, not only increased their writing self-efficacy, but also significantly increased the quality of their written scientific arguments and these outcomes are significantly higher than those identified for students in the control classrooms.
