Designing a Curriculum in Professionalism and Social Responsibility for Doctor of Physical Therapy Education

Mon, April 20, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

The University of California, San Francisco/San Francisco State University Doctor of Physical Therapy Program curriculum provides opportunities for students to acquire and practice clinical skills using a range of quantitative assessments. However, it is more challenging to define, teach and assess professionalism skills and behaviors, yet this is the area wherein students struggle in clinical practice. Furthermore, healthcare providers must have a cultural humility and sense of social responsibility. Faculty and administrative leaders have designed a professionalism curriculum within the context of cultural competence education, as well as a plan for assessment of learner progress. Future plans include dissemination of the results to enable other health professions to follow this innovative model of professionalism and social responsibility education and assessment.
