This research examined rural students’ college plans, specifically their plans for when and whether to enroll in college after high school. Data were drawn from the Rural-Adolescent-Plans study, a longitudinal panel survey of 5th-12th grade students in Vermont. Multinomial logistic regression was used to compare influential factors associated with students' college plans across four groups–those with plans to enroll right after high school, those with plans to delay at least one year, those with plans not to go to college, and those who were not sure yet. Significant differences in family, school, and community backgrounds were found across these four subgroups. We review causes/consequences of different pathways and discuss implications for the development of intervention programs for rural students.
