Digital Video Composition With Children With Special Needs as Redistributive Social Justice: Javier's Case

Abstract

In this paper, we draw on two years’ worth of observation, interview, survey, and digital video data to present a case study of Javier (all names are pseudonyms), a Latino intermediate English Language Learner with several learning disabilities. We worked with him making multimodal, digital videos in a general education classroom setting, and in this paper we use his case to ask and answer questions about how his learning disabilities interacted with his multimodal, digital composing practices. We describe the ways in which video production allowed Javier to participate in classroom digital literacy activities, draw on his cultural knowledge, address his IEP goals, and, in some instances, move beyond his disabilities. Implications for teachers and researchers across fields are addressed.
